Palomino Horses Grazing in a Meadow

This series is based on the re-creation of a memory through material and image. It recalls the long hours spent in the car on French country roads while traveling to a holiday destination. The landscape was almost the only thing to look at. Amid the monotony of the journey, certain details would suddenly catch my attention. Among them were horses grazing in a meadow. Their appearance interrupted the boredom and, for a few seconds, brought a sense of wonder.

The pieces were made first. The horsehair, gathered into locks, is held together by green cotton threads that evoke the grass and other plants on which the animal feeds. What nourishes the animal thus becomes what structures its form.

Like all memories, this one is incomplete and distorted. I heighten this distortion by using artificial intelligence to produce an image of a scene that never existed exactly in this form. The visual memory therefore does not precede the material: it is created from it. In the pieces, the horses become horsehair and the grass becomes thread; in the image, these materials become horses and landscape once again.

This fictional image of the memory is printed as a postcard in an edition of one hundred. The choice of the postcard relates directly to memories of vacations: it depicts what left an impression during the journey, what we choose to preserve and share. As an ordinary, industrially produced and reproducible object, it stands in contrast to the unique, tactile, handmade pieces. The series thus brings together two ways of reconstructing the past: one through the production of an artificial and reproducible image, the other through physical contact with material originating from the animal.
