OCEAN
2024
Ocean is a series composed of five mixed-media bas reliefs that explore the grandeur of the sea through its diversity, mystery, power, and vital role, alongside its fragility. These works are reflections of my personal interactions with the sea, capturing its force and the natural elements I have encountered. Incorporating sand, shells, and feathers, collected directly from the natural world, the series offers an immersive sensory exploration. It also serves as a poignant reminder of our smallness in the face of the sea’s immensity and the humility it imposes upon us.
Abyssal Crescendo embodies the music the ocean can create, with its form resembling that of a guitar, thanks to the arrangement of seashells, thread made from sand, and wood—all natural elements derived from the sea. The red and cream-colored sand threads also evoke the angel of the sea, a creature from the abyss, while the deep blue color suggests the mysterious depths where many species remain undiscovered.
How Long Will Paradise Last? is crafted with different shades of light-colored sand, layered in overlapping triangular shapes reminiscent of fish scales. These layers are attached to a kind of half-sphere painted in light blue at the top. Through its colors and form, this work references paradisiacal islands with clear water and light-colored sand, often seen on postcards, and raises questions about the sustainability of such idyllic places in light of climate changes.
Fin Escape explores the relationship between humans and fish—one chasing the other. The shape of the artwork references both a fish's dorsal fin and a boat's sail, suggesting a form of mimicry. In the center of the piece, a fishing net occupies the space, symbolizing the connection and the tension between the two. This piece also raises concerns about overfishing and its impact on marine species, particularly cetaceans.
And Above It, the Birds Fly captures a core sample from the ocean, illustrating the layered environment from the ocean floor to the sky. Sand dotted with seashells at the base, blue threads symbolizing water, and blue and white representing the sky with feathers symbolizing birds overhead, provide a snapshot of the dynamic ecosystem.
Offshore, One Can See the Stars represents the starry sky at sea. This oval-shaped piece uses seashells to symbolize stars against a backdrop of blue that evokes a clear, peaceful night. The gray section crossed by threads of sand suggests rain, while the concave part symbolizes a sheltered bay, capturing the experience of time spent at sea under the stars and raising awareness about light pollution.
