AFTER THE DUST SETTLES
2019
New Mexico, Georgia O'Keeffe's Ghost’s Ranch.
After a visit to the museum dedicated to the artist in Santa Fe, I suddenly felt the need to go to the place where she painted her famous red mountains. I want to be imbued by the place, as if to find something of her in me. Don't we all do this when someone inspires us? We would like to be in his or her skin, but since we cannot, we get as close as possible. By going to the Ghost Ranch, I aspire to meet her ghost so that she can live in me and breathe her genius into me.
But it’s winter. The place is closed to the public. The visit is impossible. I don't want to turn back though, without taking something from this place, something from her. The surroundings of the ranch are deserted, but a small path emerges not far from there. I am following it, thinking to myself that she should have definitely walked it regularly so I follow in her footsteps. At the top of a small hill, I come across a tree, which stands tall, thin and bony, it reminds me of her. At its foot, this famous red earth. I have found what I am going to bring home with me.
