AFTER THE DUST SETTLES
2019
New Mexico, Georgia O'Keeffe's Ghost’s Ranch.
After the Dust Settles is a series composed of eight pieces, each measuring 30 x 22 inches, created by applying soil to photographs.
After visiting the museum dedicated to Georgia O’Keeffe in Santa Fe, I wanted to deepen my understanding of her life by visiting the place where she painted her famous red hills—Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú. Unfortunately, the ranch was not open to the public.
Nevertheless, I was not ready to turn back right away. I decided to explore the surroundings that had inspired her, in terms of both atmosphere and landscape. Following a small path that appeared nearby, I came upon a dry, imposing tree atop a small hill. I imagined that this tree could be her, standing at the top of the hill, observing the landscape. At its base, the tree's roots met the famous red earth. I took a sample of this vibrant soil and photographed the tree. Back in my studio, I applied the red earth directly onto the photograph, tracing the lines of the tree. Just as one might choose a postcard from a museum to remember a visit, this series now serves as a tangible memento of my thorough exploration of Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and art.
