THE CHRYSALIS

2021

The Chrysalis consists of sixteen paper and vellum flowers, outlined with woven cotton thread. The flowers are suspended upwards on a wooden platform. Each flower is unique, crafted with specific materials, all in white. The Chrysalis echoes the struggles of adolescence during a period of change; its sixteen flowers symbolize the culmination of that phase.

Each flower acts as a chrysalis, representing the transitional state between childhood and adulthood, particularly the transformation of the body from childhood to adulthood. The use of the white color conveys purity and morbidness. Vellum serves as a symbol of the shroud left behind during the transition from childhood, while also symbolizing the chrysalis — a preparation for the adult world.

The flowers are suspended, detached from the earth, creating a sense of levitation and suspended time. The weaving around each flower, combined with their flat, colorless, and odorless nature, further emphasizes these two aspects.
