GUMVERSATION

Gumversation portrays an urban language created by us through the pattern of chewing gums stuck on the sidewalks of our cities. Embroidered with 24-carat gold thread, the shapes of the gums collected from the sidewalks are dispersed across a translucent canvas made from fused plastic bags, following the square design of the sidewalks. The lightweight plastic canvas, torn by the heat used to fuse the bags, echoes the texture of the gum we chewed in our mouths.

Both the plastic from the bags and the latex from chewing gum possess initial elasticity, but they undergo a transformation when fused for the bags and when the gum dries, losing its elasticity and becoming rigid. This transformation is emphasized by the use of a metal golden thread, which itself has a rigid quality. 

 

Each gum can be seen as words placed on the sidewalks, creating conversations and dialogues, particularly in busy areas. From mouth to cement, we express ourselves through the gums, making our thoughts visible. Once chewed and discarded onto the sidewalk, the gum undergoes a symbolic transformation, turning into a rigid form that encapsulates our musings.
